Survival Art

Welcome to Native Colors! Welcome to a world of imagination & fantasy. Welcome to Paradise!

You are invited to view some of the most unique and imaginative images of original artwork. Created form recycled oil drums by the people of the Caribbean island of Haiti. Works that we call "Survival Art". This process enables each artist to create a work of art our of his environment, while giving us a glimpse into the styles and traditions of history and local folk tales. Not only do these works sustain the lives and economy of those who have created them, but they help preserve the history and mythology that surround this colorful island culture. While known for its poverty and political uneasiness, Haiti also celebrates a rich cultural heritage. Artists express themselves with bold vision and brilliant colors encompassing the beguiling magic that is Haiti.

Although the modern pressures of overpopulation and poverty have ravaged much of its natural beauty, Haiti is still full of beautiful scenic wonder, both real and imagined. We are pleased to present these original and unique pieces which can be transported into our homes to recreate, with visual impact, the messages and beauty of their origin.

Each metal sculpture is created without the use of modern tools or conveniences. Using only a chisel and mallet, each piece is hand carved from memorized patterns, then hand painted with slight variations in palate. Created to last a lifetime and endure all climates. A simple application (biannually) of a clear gloss finish permits you to enjoy your artwork outdoors year round. Whether indoors or out, whether in brilliant sunshine or through a sudden rainstorm, these pieces can withstand the elements and provide you with a continual glimpse of the warmth and history that is their inspiration.
